Tables is an ongoing series based on paintings by my father.
Dad’s paintings surrounded me as a child and were, I have come to realise, a strong subconscious influence upon my own visual sensibility. In the winter of 2016, during his last illness, I rented a quiet village hall near to my home in Kent in which to spend time making pictures alone. The resulting large format film studies use commonplace objects to explore composition, light and atmosphere. By simplifying content and concept, I wanted to study the unconscious processes of picture making itself. They are my homage to the first and most important artist I ever knew.
